Theta Phi Alpha has two chapters in Louisiana. Many of our collegiate sisters and alumnae were affected by Hurricane Katrina. Their homes have been lost or damaged. Many are not living at their homes. Some have lost their jobs. We will feature here needs that we are able to fill. One woman, currently living in Texas, will be relocating to her mom's house in a few weeks while they rebuild. As many of her family were affected with loss of housing, I was most touched by her request. Her sister-in-law is due to give birth very soon. Hurricane Katrina interfered with their plans for a baby shower, so they have nothing to get started. They are in need of basic baby supplies like bottles, blankets, diapers, and onesies. The baby, Coleman, is due soon. Her aunt and our sorority sister is Stacy.

Another woman was a nurse, whose husband and young son stayed at her work, a hospital in New Orleans. They were taken by helicopter to the New Orleans Convention Center, which you probably saw on television (the center, not the sister). They found someone to give them a ride outside of New Orleans and found someone else to get them to Baton Rouge, where family came to get them. They had just been in their home 2-3 weeks. Her name is Jeanine. They are getting together a list of their more specific needs.

A young attorney lost her home and her clients, and therefore her job. She has relocated to a new area and joined a law firm. However, in order to work, she and several other attorneys are sharing clothes and shoes. She is looking for suits in the size 6-8 petite range and shoes in sizes 6 or 6&1/2. However, she will accept donations of all sizes and share with people she knows, the rest she is taking to the shelter nearby. Her name is Vanessa.

For large financial donations, please consider the American Red Cross or Salvation Army. Friends affected by prior hurricanes say that they would have gone days without a hot meal, water or ice if not for these organizations.
